Great thriller movies are known for clever plots, tense, spine chilling atmosphere and truly shocking twists or endings. Every movie fan around the globe has favorite ones. Here are in my opinion the best thriller movies of all times, ranked from number 10 to number 1.
Inception (2010)
A thief (Leonardo DiCaprio) who enters the dreams of others and steal their ideas goes on one last mission: this time, he and his team won't be stealing idea but planting one... Christopher Nolan's ('The Dark Knight') sci-fi thriller, set in not so distant future, explores the curious world of dreams and tricky ways of sub-conscience. It will keep you wondering: 'Is this dream or reality? Am I real or am I someone's projection?' The fact there is no villain here that audience's suppose to hate, makes this film even more intriguing. In fact, the closest thing to villain is the main character's sub-conscience.
Best line: 'You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.'
The Usual Suspects (1995)
At the police interrogation, small-time con man (Kevin Spacey), one of only two survivors of a massacre on a ship in Port of L.A., recalls events that led him and four other criminals to the boat... The key to this neo-noir thriller directed by Bryan Singer ('Valkyrie') is finding out identity of mysterious character, gangster known as Keyser Söze. Due to a complexity of the story, this movie requires and deserves to be watched several times. Christopher McQuarrie's ('The Way of the Gun') screenplay was awarded with Oscar, as well as Kevin Spacey ('Seven') for his episode role.
Best line: 'The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.'
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
A young FBI cadet (Jodie Foster) seeks help from imprisoned manipulative killer (Anthony Hopkins) in order to catch another serial killer...Creepy psychological thriller, directed by Jonathan Demme ('Rachel Getting Married') keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. This first adaptation of the Hannibal 'Cannibal' Lecter series, based on Richard Harris' books, won 5 Oscars in main categories and the reputation of cult classic. Jodie Foster ('The Brave One') plays vulnerable character that's easy to identify with, while Anthony Hopkins ('Red Dragon') plays one of the most gruesome villain in history of cinema.
Creepiest line: 'I do wish we could chat longer, but... I'm having an old friend for dinner.'
Oldboy (2003)
An average Korean man (Choi Min-sik) searches for answers and seeks revenge after being released from a shabby cell, where he was imprisoned for 15 years, without explanation... This controversial thriller, the second part of director Park Chan-wook's trilogy ('Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance' and 'Lady Vengeance') won prize Grand Jury at Cannes and was named one of the ten best Asian films ever by voters on CNN. Although it won't appeal to everyone due to a strong violence, the others might enjoy brilliantly stylised sequences, quirky humour and great performance by Choi Min-sik.
Best line: 'Revenge is good for your health, but pain will find you again.'
North By Northwest (1959)
An advertising executive (Cary Grant), being mistaken for a secret agent and framed for murder, must flee across the country, at the same time trying to prove his innocence... The master of suspense himself Alfred Hitchcock ('Vertigo') directed this adrenaline-fuelled spy thriller, which easily keeps one's attention for 131 minutes of the runtime - without bunch of explosions and CGI effects. Cary Grant ('Charade') is charming as ordinary man in dangerous situation, who gets help from mysterious blonde Eve Marie Saint ('On the Waterfront'). Or does he?
Best line: 'I didn't realize you were an art collector. I thought you just collected corpses.'
